Singapore Sings!
On a recent trip flying on Singapore Airlines, I was fascinated by the meal tray presentation. The hot entrée was served in a cute box with a hinged lid, reminiscent of a mini shoe box and decorated with informative and alluring printing. It was easy to hold in one hand. At first look, I thought the portion size was tiny, but after eating, the heated portion was delicious and filling.
Singapore Airlines is “Designing for a Cause” and I believe they have succeeded in replacing a plastic tray with a paper package that is perceived as more sustainable to their demanding customer base. Buyer beware, that the box has a thin coating of plastic (APET) so it can be dual ovenable and not leak. I remind my audience that APET coated paper is NOT recyclable in the current USA recycling stream. Note that Europe has a less stringent specification for APET coated paper and will consider it recyclable in the paper stream if the plastic is less than 5% of the total structure.

So kudos to Singapore Airlines. I look forward to my next trip with them to further see the evolution of airline packaging for hot meals.
